The Schedule

The schedule

(I’ll be updating this page as plans develop so check back often)

As I’ve said, I’m a middle of the pack runner. The runner that celebrates getting to the start line as much as getting to the finish line. Having run my first marathon in 2011, and having a mere 4 marathons and 2 ultras under my belt – I’m certainly no expert, but a great enthusiast.  Here is my budding schedule to the 20marathons20months adventure.

I’m keen to hear suggestions of must-do races around New Zealand and Australia. Help me compile this schedule…

November 2013: addidas Auckland Marathon, 3rd of November, entered.  This marks the beginning of the 20marathons in 20months project.  Starting off an early morning ferry ride from Auckland city across the harbour to Devonport, a run over the harbour bridge and then out to Mission bay and back.  I’ve run this event in 2011 and 2012 –knowing what to expect and looking forward to it. The marathon is 80%  full so those interested, enter soon.

December 2013: 3 Bridges Marathon run in Wanganui on 14th of December.  I have not heard much about this event (will add more info when I come across it).  I’ve chosen this event for convenience really, relatively close to home (3-4 hour drive), and my Dad will be arriving from South Africa the day after.

January 2014: Hutt River Trail Event, in Hutt Valley. It so happens that this run is the weekend after my Dad leaves New Zealand.   With an ultra (60km), marathon, half marathon and 10km option, should be a good day.  I’ll be doing the marathon distance here.

February 2014: 1st of February will be the epic Backcountry Runner Kaweka Mountain Marathon (actually we can call it an ultra can’t we?). I ran this monster 47km earlier this year (took me 10hours +), this will be a goody. The description on the website says it best “The Backcountry runner Kaweka Mountain Marathon embraces the natural beauty of the Hawke’s Bay high country. The route will take you through forest clad hills, over rugged and exposed mountain terrain to the highest point in the Kaweka Ranges, Kaweka J. At 1721m, Kaweka J offers spectacular views to the volcanoes of the Central Plateau, the Kaimanawa Ranges and the Hawke’s Bay. From the top of Kaweka J, the course takes you down into the heart of the Kawekas, returning to the start via deep gullies and a final ascent and descent over Kuripapango to the finish line. An exceptional physical challenge requiring high levels of fitness, that rewards all who take it on.” They have 15km, 33km and the 47km option, something for everyone. Good to note that runner safety is taken very seriously, with essential gear checks a welcomed sight.  Run on a Saturday, with a bunch included in the entry for the Sunday, a good reason to enjoy the Bay.  Entries open in September 2013.

March 2014: The Vibram Tarawera Ultra has been on my to-run list for the last two years now; I am stoked to have entered to 60km event for 2014. The website summarizes “The Vibram Tarawera Ultra is a 100, 85 or 60km trail ultra distance run from Rotorua to Kawerau, New Zealand. Along way you'll pass through exotic forestry, native bush, lakes, waterfalls and follow a beautiful river. Most of the run is on single track trails or forestry roads. You can compete as a solo athlete or in a relay team. There will be buffet aid stations, drop bags, pacers, spot prizes and free hotpools. You'll get to share the trails with an international field of athletes.” I’ve heard great things about this race, well organised with an impressive line up of elite athletes

May 2014: The 50th running of the Rotorua Marathon on the 3rd of May 2014.  Rotorua was my first ever marathon, I've run this twice (2011 and 2012) and will be looking forward to this run.  Great atmosphere on the route, I remember some spectators dressed in suits and evening gowns drinking champagne in 2011 and 2012, will be looking out for these guys again.  Some good deals at the expo, and some pretty good spot prizes at prize giving, definitely worth hanging around for.

June 2014: will see both the running of the Christchurch (01/06/2014) and Wellington Marathons (later in June). Having visited both of these cities, but not run in either, I will pencil these in as tentative to-do’s.

After this, the calendar is pretty open. I would be keen to hear thoughts and suggestions for other events to take me from July 2014… through to Comrades Marathon in June 2015 (I’ll add a post about Comrades soon). Would be great to run some events in Australia – suggestions?   I’d like to lock the Melbourne Marathon in for October 2014, to run with fellow charity marathon runner and friend Gerard Lowrie.

The budding Bull Run in Melbourne looks promising, I understand this Comrades Marathon inspired event will grow into a must-run event in Australia. May need to make this my December 2014 run…
